Happy CNY 2019 to everyone! It’s a time of celebration and I’m looking forward to the public holidays next Tues & Wed plus it’s a half day for me tomorrow. It’s nice to have some time off from work. I’m just in a cruising mood now as my performance review is finishing and I will be waiting for my remuneration outcome to be released in Mar 2019.
To be honest, I have been thinking about leaving my current job role at the bank. Either to try another job role at the same bank or to go elsewhere to a different bank. I have already spoken to recruitment consultants to express my interest. It’s coming down to push factors rather than pull factors that’s causing this.
There’s an increasing expectation for me to step up and cover more areas of work. But I don’t think they are paying me enough to do it. I guess this always happens once you to stay longer in your current job role. Which is why leaving for a different job role with a higher salary helps to reset and more clearly define your scope of work.
Anyway, I will see how it goes after reviewing my pay increase and bonus in Mar 2019 as to whether it’s sufficient for me to stay. In any case, my wife is also in a cruising mode for 2019. It allows us to stabilise while looking internally or externally for job opportunities that interest us.
As for our investments, we invested about S$50,000 during the market dip across Dec 2018 and Jan 2019. Since the market has climbed back up, I’m happy to sit back and watch from the sidelines. My strategy is clear. I buy into every market dip (investing more as it gets more significant) while keeping most of my cash (which recovers gradually with each month) for the market crash.
I’m convinced nobody knows where the market is going. Everyone gets it right eventually if you continue to guess the direction all the time despite getting it wrong. Besides, my investments into ETFs are more to hedge against technological and structural changes to the economy that can really screw with our jobs. Any capital gain and passive income is a bonus for my hedging investment strategy.
Anyway, it’s another CNY that we have made it to and I hope it’s a better year for us. All the best everyone!
